About Devante Owens

Though he was not born in Fairbanks, Devante Owens grew up in Alaska.  After two years in an engineering program, Devante switched his major to art.  However, remnants of his science background influence his work and he is best known for his surreal pastel drawings and prints that blend the sea and cosmos.  His use of dark backgrounds accentuate color, creating contrast that brings each piece to life and makes the subject matter leap off the canvas.  While his work is rooted in realism, he creates false borders and reflections that emphasize interaction between art and the viewer’s world.  In 2017, Devante earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in printmaking and drawing from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.  While he primarily work in two dimensional medias, Devante has recently begun exploring artist books and hopes to integrate his work into a more interactive form.  He currently works at Well Street Art Company and plans to attend graduate school in the near future.
